View All Features Industry News September Xbox Outsells Wii In Japan For the first time ever the Xbox has outsold both the PlayStation and Wii this week in Japan according to data provided by Famitsu publisher Enterbrain. Although weekly data from regular chart provider Media Create will not be available until Friday the Enterbrain figures show an expected sharp rise in Xbox sales following new stock replenishments and a price cut for all models. Usually languishing in last place behind even the PlayStation Xbox sales spiked in August following the release of Namco Bandai s role playing game Tales of Vesperia . Hardware stock was quickly exhausted though and has not been replenished until now. According to Enterbrain s figures as translated by website Andriasang.com the Xbox sold units for the seven days ending September th. By comparison the PlayStation sold units a relatively normal figure for the last few weeks and Wii sales were down to a recent low of units. Xbox sales were also helped by the launch of Square Enix s role playing game Infinite Undiscovery which sold units on its debut. However it was significantly outsold by the release of Pokemon Platinum on Nintendo DS which managed unit sales in just two days. This was the best opening performance ever for a single Nintendo DS game and is expected to ensure that the hardware is again the best selling of the week. Nevertheless the Xbox s triumph is likely to have a long lasting effect on Japanese consumer and retailer confidence in the format which Enterbrain now calculates to have sold units over its lifetime in Japan. However the content you record can be exported from the program to the PS s XMB for instant viewing. It doesn t take a huge leap of imagination to see where that s leading. So will PlayTV prove a major headache for Sky s Sky box BT s Vision V Box and Virgin s V The fact that it s limited to the free selection of digital terrestrial channels is a disadvantage although depending on how much you actually watch it s a small one. And with the added remote viewing capabilities it s an appealing package. The whole lot costs . and will be privy to additional features over time as Sony is able to overhaul the service via Firmware updates in much the same way as the PS itself. DRM is not the issue other than that when it was annouced to be DRM free we were hoping for easy exporting to PSP mobile phones or any other video playing device without hassle. Due to copyright considerations there are restrictions in place to ensure that content is not directly exportable to the PSP. We spoke to Sony this afternoon and confirmed this. However as you point out content exported to the XMB could be transferred to a PC and then re encoded for PSP. The Oxford University team want to determine if such technology can be used to monitor improvements in upper body movements in patients undergoing physiotherapy. The researchers hope that it will allow patients to see their progress and motivate them to keep exercising. Clinical trials of the equipment are being planned they say. The researchers believe that the motion sensors may enable physiotherapists to assess the range of movement a patient has and help them tailor exercises accordingly. Since people are often faced with a lack of motivation to continue with their exercises according to the researchers this exciting stuff is worth exploring. The makers of the new technology have revealed that they based their work on a previous study in which the walking pattern in children affected with cerebral palsy were analysed. They have utilised the same motion sensing technology that records the movements of actors for computer generated films such as Beowulf. They use a total of infrared cameras to track the movement of reflective markers stuck to a person s wrist arm and torso in real time. Research leader Dr Penny Probert Smith said that though motivate stroke patients could be hard the early days were vital. GamePie the name for the app will give you an avenue to rate review and recommend games to all of your friends that have also added the application. I got to chat with Sean Spector co founder of GameFly and Jason Wade product manager for the application about what exactly it will do for the gaming community on Facebook and hints to where they plan to take it. When you first add the app you will be presented with several pages of games that you can rate on a scale of mark them as one you are being interested in playing or simply say that you aren t interested. Once done with that you will move on to your profile page that allows you to see a feed of your gaming friends most recent activity inside of the application and what there feelings are on various games. If you want a more detailed look into their gaming life you simply need to click on their name to go to their own gaming profile page. Also for a bit of fun you can set a status to your account specific to the app so feel free to add a status such as the game you are playing and what level you are stuck on. The most intriguing thing to me was the individual pages built for each game. Whether you click on the game inside of a profile or if you choose to use their search you will be taken to that game s individual wall page. Here you will see how your friends as well as the community as a whole are rating the game as well as leave typical wall style comments about it. If you prefer to leave something a bit more permanent you can also choose to write an actual review that will be stored on another tab. For now the application catalogs the games released for all of the Sony and Microsoft consoles Nintedo going back to the Gamecube and Game Boy Advance and for the PC and Mac back to approximately . Eventually they hope to have entered every game for every console all the way back to the time of Atari bringing the catalog to somewhere around games. If demand warrants it you may also someday see regional versions of the apps so people can discuss games specific to their countries but for now it is North American games only. Currently the application is only available on Facebook but they do have plans to extend it out to MySpace Bebo and Hi . The only thing I found mildly disappointing is that there is no interconnectivity with a GameFly account if the user should happen to have one but Mr. Spector assured me that was a definite possibility down the road. All in all this is a solid application no matter what the subject matter and for gamers it could become an indespinsible tool to help you decide your next purchase or influence a friend to play your favorite. The games included three titles from Square Enix one from Bandai Namco and two from Microsoft s game studios. Bandai Namco s Tales of Vesperia will launch in Japan on Aug. and cost US . It will go on sale in North America in August during the summer in Asia but won t be available in Europe until . Using a trick it s employed with other high profile games the title will also be bundled in a pack with an Xbox console. Sales of the console have been low in Japan compared with the rest of the world so all in one sets might be more attractive to Japanese gamers many of whom might be interested in the game but don t already own the Microsoft console. The set will include custom face plates and the game and will cost . Among the three games from Square Enix Star Ocean was previewed and will be available in . Like the other titles in the series the game takes place in the aftermath of a nuclear war at a time when humans take to the stars to flee the dying Earth. The fourth installment takes place several hundred years before the original titles around just a decade or two after the war when space travel is just becoming possible. The only one of the Square Enix titles to get a launch date was the Xbox exclusive Infinite Undiscovery which will hit store shelves on Sept. in Japan and Asia. Square Enix didn t name launch dates but shipping dates when the packaged software leaves the warehouse for shops for North America and Europe. They are Sept. and Sept. respectively. In front of the largely Japanese crowd Producer Hajime Kojima tried to spin the earlier shipping dates as meaning it will get into the hands of gamers around the world at almost the same time but foreign gamers can likely look forward to getting it several days earlier than those in Square Enix s home market. The final game on show was Last Remnant . Square Enix promises the title in the winter with a simultaneous release in Japan North America Europe and Asia. The maker declined to give a more precise date but provided good news for Xbox gamers by promising it will hit the platform before the PlayStation version is launched. From Microsoft will come Fable an action RPG that is due out by the end of this year. The company also said it will bring Mass Effect which has already been launched in other markets to Japan.
